The founder of Akira Dog Training and professional Dog Trainer and Behaviour Consultant is Mandy Locks. She is passionate about dog welfare, having worked for nearly 5 years as a Training and Behaviour Advisor at her local Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre.  Her time there means she has extensive experience assessing and rehabilitating a wide range of dog breeds and behavioural issues.

Mandy is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (www.apdt.co.uk) and The Animal Behaviour and Training Council (www.abtcouncil.org.uk) both of which have a strict assessment process for membership. Mandy also has an Honours Degree in Psychology and holds a Certificate of Higher Education in Companion Animal Welfare and Behavioural Rehabilitation with Bristol University.  She is also a Fear Free Certified Practitioner.

Mandy’s background and qualifications in both human and dog psychology means she has the knowledge and skills to work effectively with both humans and dogs; often a dog’s behaviour won’t change unless we change our own behaviour.  She is able to adapt her training to suit the needs and learning styles of each individual dog and owner, which makes for a more stress free and enjoyable learning experience for all concerned.

Mandy believes passionately in force free, reward based training based on the most up-top-date sound scientific evidence; that is methods that have been scientifically proven to be effective.  We all prefer to learn by being set up to succeed and rewarded for getting it right, rather than being set up to fail so our behaviour can then be corrected.  Dogs are no different, they learn quicker and more effectively this way and this method of learning fosters a secure and trusting relationship between you and your dog.  Rewards are anything that your dogs loves – food, toys, playing, chasing, swimming, affection – we harness these motivators and use them to reward your dog for the behaviours that we want them to repeat. The training methods employed are kind, fair and effective.

Mandy promotes a relationship with your dog based on mutual respect and trust.  Dog ownership and training should be fun and rewarding and Mandy will help you to achieve this using simple, easy to understand methods.  All she asks of the owner is the willingness to commit to the training and practice, practice, practice!.
